Steam Tap Cleaning

  1. First step in the cleaning process is to unplug your steam tap from the module via the CPC quick disconnect at the back of the module.  Use care in removing this connection, it could be very hot.  Steam could still be in the line if it was just in use! Use a cool damp rag to handle the valve body if it is still hot, that will help to cool it down and protect your hands :) Remove the steam tap tower cover by loosening the 3 set screws with a small flat screwdriver.  It is not necessary to remove the set screws, only loosen to allow the cap to come off.

    • Use a cool damp rag to handle the valve body if it is still hot, that will help to cool it down and protect your hands :)

    • Remove the steam tap tower cover by loosening the 3 set screws with a small flat screwdriver. It is not necessary to remove the set screws, only loosen to allow the cap to come off.

    • Using the adjustable wrench (22mm shown if you have one), take off the wand nut. As you get close to the end of the threads be careful as the nut is under spring pressure and might pop the spring, cup and washers out. Use your hands to finish up the last few threads and make sure to catch all the parts!

    • After removing the wand assembly and setting it aside in a safe place, go ahead and pull the steam valve body assembly out of the steam tower as shown. Now remove the steam tap tube at the push connector, using your fingers push on the collar of the connector and pull down on the tube, it should come right out.

  2. Using a small brush and mild dish soap, brush away any debris/grime from the valve body assembly as shown.  Then give the valve body a good rinse in cool water. Once the valve body is cleaned, you are ready to start re-assembly.  Use bike lube to lubricate the tap handle and food grade silicone grease to lubricate drive shaft (you can order from us).  Add the bike lube to the area in the green circle and work it back and forth with the handle until it looks like the one in the picture.   3. Insert the valve body back into the steam tap tower.  Use only food safe Permabond (you can order from us) on the wand nut fitting threads.  This step is important and can not be skipped!  The Permabond provides the seal at the wand nut and will keep steam from leaking by. Older model taps may have a white teflon ring around wand nut fitting threads, this can be discarded.  An extra spacer may need to be used in its place. Now you can start adding the wand parts back into the wand nut fitting, starting with the shims as shown.
    • Insert the valve body back into the steam tap tower. Use only food safe Permabond (you can order from us) on the wand nut fitting threads. This step is important and can not be skipped! The Permabond provides the seal at the wand nut and will keep steam from leaking by.

    • Older model taps may have a white teflon ring around wand nut fitting threads, this can be discarded. An extra spacer may need to be used in its place.

    • Now you can start adding the wand parts back into the wand nut fitting, starting with the shims as shown.

  4. After placing the shims in the wand fitting, insert the spring as shown. With the spring now in place, put the brass cup on next (small amount of silicone grease will help to hold in place).  Then carefully start to attach the wand to the fitting.  Because of the spring tension you may need to brace the valve body with another wrench, or you can hold onto the steam handle to keep it in place while starting the wand nut. After tightening down the wand nut, check the feel of the wand and be sure it doesn't feel too loose/tight.  If it is loose/tight, adjustment is made by adding or removing shims one at a time until desired wand feel is achieved.
    • After placing the shims in the wand fitting, insert the spring as shown.

    • With the spring now in place, put the brass cup on next (small amount of silicone grease will help to hold in place). Then carefully start to attach the wand to the fitting. Because of the spring tension you may need to brace the valve body with another wrench, or you can hold onto the steam handle to keep it in place while starting the wand nut.

    • After tightening down the wand nut, check the feel of the wand and be sure it doesn't feel too loose/tight. If it is loose/tight, adjustment is made by adding or removing shims one at a time until desired wand feel is achieved.

    • Last but not least, do not forget to put the cap back on the steam tap tower. Plug the tap back into the CPC fitting in the back of the module. Actuate the tap several times, check for leaks around the wand nut and re-check wand feel after it has warmed up. Check for leaks under the counter as well.

    • If you found no leaks and the tap is working properly, you have finished the proper cleaning of your steam tap.
